In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
