British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
